However, Esther's truck is attacked by the Nazis, and she escapes into the forest, where she meets a boy her age, Assi (Arthur Hakalahti). Assi falls for her and hides her in the barn at his home. To avoid detection by the Nazis, she disguises herself as a boy and escapes with Assi from the Nazi-occupied territory to Sweden, hoping her parents are still waiting for her.
