Sophie (Mickey Sumner) is Frances' (Greta Gerwig) best friend and roommate. The two are inseparable, and their relationship is seemingly more intimate than that of a couple. However, one day, Sophie suddenly tells Frances that she is moving in with another girl in the city. Although Sophie assures Frances that they will still be friends, Frances feels incredibly lost inside. Unable to afford the rent on her own, Frances has to find another place to live. Sophie's friend Lev (Adam Driver) helps Frances at a crucial moment, and thus, Frances begins her cohabitation with Lev and his roommate Benji (Michael Zegen), promising to pay the rent after the Christmas dance performance. Unfortunately, not long after, Frances loses her job. For a time, she is unsure of what to do next.
