Sean (Shia LaBeouf) and Martha (Vanessa Kirby) are eagerly awaiting the birth of their love's culmination. At Martha's request, they decide to invite a midwife to their home for a home birth. However, when Martha begins the labor process, the midwife she originally selected cannot come, and another midwife named Ava (Molly Parker) takes her place. Tragedy strikes when Martha's baby dies shortly after birth due to asphyxiation. When fate deals a heavy blow, people can only grit their teeth and silently endure. To seek justice for her deceased child, Martha's mother brings in lawyer Suzanne (Sarah Snook) and sues Ava in court. While facing her shattered inner self, Martha must also cope with her crumbling marriage with Sean, and her controlling mother's relentless pressure takes away the last bit of air Martha has to breathe.
