89-year-old World War II veteran Bernie (played by Michael Caine) lives in a nursing home with his mobility-impaired wife, Renee (played by Glenda Jackson), enjoying a regular and peaceful later life. As the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landing approaches, Bernie plans to participate in the commemoration but misses the group registration opportunity. Just as he prepares to give up, Renee senses his regret and encourages him to go alone. The next morning, Bernie sneaks out of the nursing home to head to Normandy, embarking on this great "escape." During this journey, he begins to recall images of fighting alongside his comrades during the war, making Bernie realize that there are unresolved issues from his past that he must face…
