Biology professor Genessier (played by Pierre Brasseur) causes a car accident that disfigures his beloved daughter Christine (played by Edith Scob). After her recovery, Christine can only wear a terrifying white mask all day, suffering greatly. Devastated and guilt-ridden, Genessier, along with his assistant Louise (played by Alida Valli), pretends that Christine has gone missing or is dead. He secretly abducts women of similar age to his daughter, anesthetizes them, removes their skin, and transplants it onto Christine's face. However, the surgeries repeatedly fail, and the number of victims continues to rise. Witnessing the horrific killings of numerous girls her age causes Christine immense pain.
