In 1600s Italy, the talented and unruly painter Caravaggio (played by Riccardo Scamarcio) is sentenced to death for killing his enemy Ranuccio. The Countess Colonna (played by Isabelle Huppert), who has long supported him, specially petitions the Pope for clemency. Torn by indecision, the Pope decides to send a spy named "The Shadow" (played by Louis Garrel) to investigate the truth and determine whether Caravaggio should be pardoned. "The Shadow" follows the Pope's orders and uncovers that the Countess has secretly harbored Caravaggio in Naples. As he inquires into Caravaggio's dissolute lifestyle and close friends, he also summons Caravaggio's artistic enemy, Baglione (played by Vinicio Marchioni), to unveil Caravaggio's hidden secrets and inclinations; yet he is also struck by Caravaggio's brilliant but decadent talent. A grand new church in Rome has just been completed, and the Pope intends for Caravaggio to paint the altar image, also bestowing upon him a knighthood, symbolizing forgiveness. However, Caravaggio remains true to his hedonistic nature, even using prostitutes, thieves, and beggars as models for sacred paintings, causing a scandal.
