In post-World War II Alabama, Hank Williams (played by Tom Hiddleston) has become a local sensation in radio and bar clubs, unlike his wife Audrey (played by Elizabeth Olsen), who lacks singing talent. His singing career is managed by Audrey and his mother, Lillie Williams (played by Cherry Jones), but it’s clear that the two women do not get along. This has less to do with Audrey's performance and more with the fact that Hank's mother seems to dislike any woman in his life. A similar conflict arises with Hank's second wife, Billie-Jo Spears (played by Maddie Hasson). Hank sets his sights on the renowned stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, and quickly realizes his dream. However, shortly after, his health begins to deteriorate, and a series of unfortunate events, both self-inflicted and beyond his control, lead his career to decline.
