A securities broker is killed in a shooting at his company on his son's birthday. Two years later, the widow of the deceased sues the gun manufacturer Vicksburg for a huge settlement. The agent lawyer Lyle (Dustin Hoffman) with over thirty years of experience prefers to select jury members based on personal experience but ultimately collaborates with jury selection consultant Lawrence, as cases against gun companies typically have low success rates. On the other hand, the gun company hires renowned jury consultant Rankin (Gene Hackman) to thoroughly investigate the backgrounds of the jury members in hopes of controlling the jury.
Young Nick (John Cusack) is selected for the jury, but his intentions initially seem less than pure. Nick employs various tactics to vie for power within the jury against Rankin, while his partner Mary (Rachel Weisz) signals to both Lyle and Rankin, promising that they can control the jury if they provide funding. As Rankin struggles against Nick's maneuvers, his subordinates discover Nick's true intentions...
