The story takes place in the exotic Panama, where Harry (Geoffrey Rush) is a skilled tailor who thrives among the elites and political figures in Panama due to his exceptional craft and his silver tongue. Everything he does is to cover up a dark past. However, the truth eventually comes to light, and the arrival of Andrew (Pierce Brosnan), a member of the British embassy, throws Harry into a dangerous situation. Andrew uses Harry's past as leverage, ordering him to become his informant in Panama's political scene, collecting intelligence for Britain and the United States to gain control of the Panama Canal. Reluctantly, Harry complies, but his anger and dissatisfaction give rise to lies; he tells Andrew that an underground organization is planning an armed movement to overthrow the government.
