Born into an ordinary family, Ayako (played by Isuzu Yamada) currently works for a pharmaceutical company. She has feelings for her colleague Nishimura, who is a rather unreliable and unresponsible man. Unfortunately, Ayako's father is also in dire straits, as he has embezzled funds and faces prison time. To save her father, Ayako reluctantly agrees to become the boss's mistress in exchange for money to cover the embezzled funds. During this time, she must also find ways to support her brother, who is attending university. Despite her exhausting efforts, she ultimately parts ways with her boss. In the face of money, Ayako spares no effort and tries various methods. However, her sacrifices and selflessness do not earn her the respect of her father, brother, or Nishimura. What does her existence mean to them?
