The film is directed by Jonathan Mostow, known for U-571. It tells the story of fighter pilot Major Edward Gordon, who is highly skilled but has an excessive zeal for religion. He believes he is an angel sent by God, bearing the enormous responsibility of destroying the world. During a flight simulation, he almost shoots down a fellow aircraft and is verbally reprimanded by flight instructor Matley, which leads to a grudge. In retaliation, Gordon kills his parents and brother, then uses a training flight opportunity to acquire multiple missiles, a nuclear bomb, and radar jammers through paperwork. He then shoots down four unarmed fighter jets. To carry out his scheme, he modifies the nuclear bomb in the fighter jet and flies to densely populated Las Vegas to carry out his sacred mission. However, the military has already received intelligence and promptly dispatches a flight team led by Matley to intercept him, resulting in a devastating aerial battle.
