To improve the Catholic Church's stereotype, the Cardinal is determined to reform, proclaiming that entering the New Jersey church on its centennial will grant exemption from all sins. The disgraced angel of death, Luke (Matt Damon), and the protector angel, Bartleby (Ben Affleck), believe this is their chance to return to Heaven. They head to New Jersey, punishing human sins along the way with violent rampages. Meanwhile, the archangel Metatron descends to find a descendant of Jesus—abortion doctor Bethany (Linda Fiorentino)—and instructs her to prevent the two angels from entering the church, as their actions would contradict God's will and lead to the world's destruction. Accompanied by two lecherous prophets, a black disciple, and a muse (Salma Hayek), Bethany embarks on a journey to save the world. In hell, demon Azrael, along with three minions and the Shit Demon, sets obstacles along the way and controls God's corporeal form to bring about world destruction. An absurd and mad battle for the fate of the world unfolds in New Jersey...
