In the African American neighborhoods of the West Coast of the United States, violence and crime are almost always happening. The youth loitering on the streets and the stench of corpses in the bushes punctuate the daily life of elementary school student Tre Styles and his friends. Tre is talkative and competitive, getting into fights with classmates. Due to his educational issues, his mother sends Tre to live with his estranged father, Furious (played by Laurence Fishburne), who has a strong personality. Under his guidance, Tre grows up... Seven years later, Tre (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.) is now a young man, and the chaotic conditions of the Black neighborhood have not improved. Tre and his friends become ensnared in a fateful cycle of street violence... The film's director, John Singleton, received an Oscar nomination for Best Director at the age of 23, holding the record for the youngest nominee in that category.
