She was born in Liaoning, grew up in Macau, and was educated in Hong Kong, growing and exploring in the interstice of Chinese and Western cultures. After obtaining a master's degree in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Hong Kong, she went to London for further studies. There, she found cinema and has not stopped since. She apprenticed under Hu Jinquan, and her debut opened a new wave of Hong Kong cinema; she navigated between commercial and artistic realms, between genre and art, continuously exploring her own and the city’s state of wandering; winning the Hong Kong Film Awards six times, and Golden Horse Awards three times, yet still facing investment challenges; from numerous accolades in her early years to hitting rock bottom, she never gave up on her commitment to the creative process. Art director and first-time director Man Limchung looks back at Ann Hui's over forty years of cinematic life, capturing her approachable and candid nature up close, as well as the emotional bond with her mother. With an unwavering devotion to film and Hong Kong, cinema has accompanied her to live a fulfilling life.
