The story takes place in late 19th century Paris, amidst the vibrant high society, where a woman named Louise (played by Danielle Darrieux) stands out remarkably. Louise's husband is a highly respected general, and the story begins with a pair of earrings that the general gave to Louise. To pay off a gambling debt, Louise sells the earrings at a low price to a jeweler, lying to her husband that they were lost. Due to the general's reputation, the jeweler truthfully reveals the situation. The general quietly buys back the earrings and gives them to his long-time mistress, Lola (played by Lia Di Leo), to win her favor. However, not long after, the earrings end up in the hands of Italian diplomat, Donati (played by Vittorio De Sica), and eventually return to their rightful owner, Louise.
