The story takes place in 1933, where British pilot Bill gets lost during a flight mission and crashes in the Sahara Desert, disappearing without a trace. His lover, Mary (played by Marion Cotillard), does not believe Bill is dead and steadfastly embarks on a journey to find him. On the way, Mary is forced to land at a French camel cavalry outpost, where she meets Captain Vincent (played by Guillaume Marquet). Mary seeks Vincent's help, but due to the turmoil in Algiers at the moment, the command refuses Mary's flight request. Unable to rely on an airplane to search for Bill, Mary decides to travel on foot. She joins the cavalry unit on a mission and encounters Lieutenant Anthony (played by Guillaume Canet). The dangers along the way are evident, but Mary's unwavering belief in finding her lover keeps her moving forward.
