Catherine (Ingrid Bergman) and Alexander (George Sanders) are a married British couple who have been together for many years. They live a comfortable life, but something is missing in terms of happiness and joy. After the death of an uncle, they inherit a villa and decide to drive to Naples to deal with this unexpected legacy. During the journey, Catherine remembers a poet who once deeply admired her, but he has long since died in the war. However, the impression he left in Catherine's mind is becoming clearer. In Naples, Catherine visits the ruins of Pompeii and various museums, and under the impact of past civilizations, her thoughts gradually begin to change. Meanwhile, Alexander, unaware of this, remains immersed in flirting with unfamiliar women.
