In the mid-Meiji period, the leader of the Kyushu gambling gang, the Yano Group, is assassinated. His only daughter, Ryoko (played by Fujiko), disbands the gang and searches for the killer, using her father's wallet, which was left beside his corpse, as a clue. With a small sword in hand, Ryoko travels to various casinos across the country over five years, gaining the nickname "Red Peony Ryoko" due to her exceptional gambling skills. In a casino in Iwakuni, Ryoko uncovers the dealer's cheating scheme, leading to a conflict, but is fortunately aided by a wandering gambler, Katagiri (played by Toshiro Mifune). After parting ways with Katagiri, Ryoko learns the whereabouts of Akinobu, who has seen the killer's face, and sets out to find him. Along the way, she forms a sibling bond with the leader of the Kumoh Tiger Group, Tokichi (played by Tomisaburo Wakayama). Recommended by the Kumoh, Ryoko and Akinobu go to meet the second-generation leader of Osaka's Sen'nari Group, Akasawa (played by Minoru Oki), where they inadvertently learn the truth...
