In the early days of the Cold War, New York lawyer James Donovan (played by Tom Hanks) defends Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (played by Mark Rylance). At a time when U.S.-Soviet relations are tense, James upholds the principles of fairness and justice, unfailingly providing a defense for Abel. Abel appreciates James's integrity, and he, in turn, admires Abel's loyalty. Although they ultimately lose the case, a subtle friendship develops between the two. Soon after, an American U2 spy plane is shot down by the Soviet military while on a covert mission. James is hired by the CIA to negotiate with the Soviets, attempting to work out a prisoner exchange to rescue the captured American pilot against extremely slim odds. The film is based on the true story of American lawyer James Donovan.
