In the grounds of the Atago Shrine, Kyōshirō saved an old man from a samurai named Akaza Gumbay. Hearing that the unremarkable old man held the position of financial administrator known as Asahina piqued Kyōshirō's interest. Several intriguing facts reached Kyōshirō's ears: the daughter of Ienari, Takahime, married into the Hori family but lost her husband early, living a free-spirited and arrogant life; the servant Muzō was promising Asahina's assassination in exchange for bribes from moneylenders and rice merchants; and that Akaza was also targeting Asahina. One day, upon encountering Takahime returning from entertainment, Kyōshirō, knowing that Muzō would summon skilled murderers, enjoyed a delightful bit of mischief. A selection of formidable killers had gathered: Akaza, Masuko, Sakakihara, Ebina, and a servant girl under Muzō, who was trying to save her husband imprisoned for promoting Christianity. The five, with differing motives and martial skills, plotted to inflict harm upon Kyōshirō. One day, captivated by the alluring charm of the servant girl who appeared before Kyōshirō, he entered an izakaya, only to unwittingly fall into Takahime’s trap, bound hand and foot and placed beside her bed. Facing the immobilized Kyōshirō, the murderers approached him in various ways, but Muzō, who had failed at everything against Kyōshirō, planned a match between Kyōshirō and Yagyū Tajima no Kami. In front of Takahime, with her cold gaze fixed upon him, Kyōshirō brilliantly struck his opponent in the chest. From Takahime’s mouth, acknowledging defeat, words of admiration for the wandering samurai Kyōshirō inadvertently slipped out. Yet, Muzō, not willing to give up, was aiming for Kyōshirō using the servant girl as bait. The atmosphere in the barren fields of Musashino thickened with murderous intent, as the time for confrontation drew ever closer.
