Edward Newgate (played by Jim Sturgess), a self-proclaimed psychiatrist and scholar from Oxford University, finds himself at the remote Stonehearst Asylum, hoping to study under the esteemed Professor Silas Lamb (played by Ben Kingsley) to learn about treatment methods. Silas has a gloomy demeanor, and his methods differ greatly from the popular approaches of the time, yet it seems to provide some relief and recovery for the patients. During his time there, Edward is captivated by the beautiful and composed lady, Eliza Graves (played by Kate Beckinsale), who suffers from hysterical symptoms of a psychological nature. New to the asylum, Edward subtly senses its oddities, and soon discovers the terrifying and astonishing secrets lurking behind its walls… This film is adapted from Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether."
