In the summer of 1935, 13-year-old Briony Tallis (portrayed by Saoirse Ronan), from a well-off British family, has just begun to experiment with writing and possesses a rich imagination. One day, she secretly discovers an ambiguous relationship between the servant's son—Robbie Turner (played by James McAvoy) and her sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley), and even finds a passionate letter he wrote to her sister. Briony's vivid imagination conjures various terrible scenarios. After her cousin Lola is raped, Briony is convinced that she saw Robbie commit the act, and this accusation leads to Robbie's wrongful imprisonment, leaving a heartbroken Cecilia behind. As World War II breaks out, both Robbie and Cecilia commit themselves to defending their country, while Briony gives up on attending Cambridge to become a military medical officer. No one understands her actions, and only she knows the enormous secret and guilt she carries. She musters the courage to try to reveal this secret, hoping for true atonement and forgiveness. However, the course of events unfolds unexpectedly for Briony.
