During World War II, the timing of the Normandy landing became crucial for the Allied forces, based on General Eisenhower's "Operation Overlord" plan. On June 6, 1944, the Normandy invasion began. To seize the high ground at the Hawk's Nest Ridge, suppress the heavy artillery and machine gun positions of the Germans at Utah and Omaha beaches, and destroy enemy heavy artillery, U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel James Earl Rudder led the 2nd Ranger Battalion, "Attack Squad," as the spearhead of this mission.
