The cruel war shattered the childhood of 12-year-old Ivan (played by Nikolay Burlyaev), whose mother and sister were killed by German troops early on. At such a young age, Ivan was forced to take to the battlefield, becoming a scout navigating through the flames of war and death. Due to his age, Lieutenant Goksen could hardly believe Ivan's identity, but from Captain Khechlin (played by Valentin Zubkov), he learned that this frail boy was unexpectedly courageous. Captain Khechlin hoped to take Ivan off the battlefield and send him far away to school. However, Ivan refused to leave, this brave boy was determined to fight until his last breath… This film won the Best Director award at the 1962 San Francisco International Film Festival and the Golden Lion at the 1962 Venice Film Festival.
