After undergoing labor reform, prisoner Li Huiquan (played by Jiang Wen) is released from prison and returns to the alley where he grew up. His old neighbor, Aunt Luo, takes good care of this lonely young man whose parents have passed away. Years ago, his buddy Chazi, upset that his girlfriend fell in love with someone else, dragged the loyal Li Huiquan along to teach that man a lesson, which unintentionally led to a death, resulting in both of them being imprisoned.
