Darth Vader (David Prowse) secretly captures Princess Leia's (Carrie Fisher) starship. In a critical moment, Leia sends the droid R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) carrying important information to seek help from the reclusive Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness). R2 successfully escapes the starship but is captured by Jawas while searching for Obi-Wan and sold to farmer Owen (Phil Brown), forcing R2 to flee again. The next day, Luke (Mark Hamill), Owen's nephew, finds R2 but is attacked by three Sand People; fortunately, Obi-Wan appears just in time to scare them away. When Luke returns home, he discovers that Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru (Sheila Fraser) have been killed by the Imperial stormtroopers pursuing R2, so he decides to follow Obi-Wan and learn the ways of the Force to become a Jedi.
