Fred (Humphrey Bogart) and Bob (Tim Holt) are two destitute drifters. One day, in a bar, they hear about gold mines from the shrewd Howard (Walter Huston). With no other options, they decide to try their luck at gold mining, falsely claiming to be hunters and setting up camp in the mountains. After enduring various hardships, the fortunate trio discovers a gold mine. However, as the quantity of gold dust increases, cracks begin to form in their once trusting relationship. During a supply run down the mountain, a young man named Cody (Bruce Bennett) discovers their secret and, upon following them, expresses his desire to take a share. The three decide to eliminate him quickly. At this critical moment, a group of bandits begins to ascend the mountain, wanting the “skins” that these three “hunters” have obtained. Amid various plots and the nature of greed, the once promising future of the three heads towards a disastrous end.
