The story takes place just after World War II, as the war-torn earth is slowly and painfully beginning to recover. John (Matt Damon) lives a life of dependence with his mother, but the post-war days are truly difficult. To make ends meet, his mother is forced to sell their farm, and John loses the only memory of his childhood, sinking into deep pain. As he grows up, John embarks on a journey with his friend Lance (Henry Thomas). Along the way, they meet a boy named Braden (Lucas Black), and the three form a deep friendship. The group arrives at a ranch where John finds work as a horse handler and falls in love with the ranch owner's daughter.
