The head of the Shinjuku gang, Sawada Shinobu (played by Yamashiro Shinwo), is attacked by an assassin (played by Miike Takashi) in a restaurant and saved by a small-time worker, Ishimatsu Rikuo (played by Kishitani Goro). From that point on, the 20-year-old nobody Ishimatsu rises dramatically to fame and becomes sworn brothers with the gang leader Sawada, gaining high prestige within the organization. Ishimatsu is ordered to assassinate Sawada's enemy, ultimately getting convicted and serving a 5-year prison sentence, during which he befriends Yumikura Kozo (played by Miki Ryosuke), an executive of the Yakuza. After five years, the bubble economy makes life difficult for the gang. After his release, Ishimatsu requests Sawada to give his wife Chieko (played by Arimori Namie) a nightclub, but a misunderstanding occurs, and Ishimatsu accidentally shoots Sawada, committing a grave taboo in the underworld, leading him down a dark path of destruction...
