Wim Wenders stated that the film focuses on the preparation astronauts undergo before their journey into space for a mission. "The preparation before the official activities begin is the hardest part for astronauts, because once you are in space, everything is ready. Prior to that, you have to say goodbye to your loved ones and adequately prepare your body to adapt to the environment. It’s about how you place fear and pain above life. Our intention is to portray a character who is both a super heroine and an ordinary mother, a role that is often weak in other films. It's time to prove that women can not only be mothers but also become great astronauts." The story is based on Wenders' own experience of separation from his daughter, and Eva Green will undergo training with French astronaut Thomas Pesquet.
