Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) was born in 1745 in the French Caribbean as the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner. He held a status in French society that other black people could not attain. He was both a violinist & composer and a fencing champion. He had an unfortunate love affair with a French noblewoman and also fell out of favor with Marie Antoinette and her court, which led to his early death.
