The story takes place in 1968. In an accident, Taylor (Charlton Heston) and Nova (Linda Harrison) find themselves transported to a timeline 2,000 years in the future. They arrive on a planet ruled by apes, and only after discovering the ruins of the Statue of Liberty on the beach do they realize that this is not an alien planet, but rather humanity's only home—Earth. A sudden massive crack in the ground leads Taylor and Nova into a vast and complex underground world, where they must face the relentless pursuit of the ape leader, Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans). In 1970, in an effort to rescue Taylor and his party, a rescue ship arrives on Earth, only to get caught in the time warp as well. Brent (James Franciscus) is the sole survivor on the ship, and he eventually reunites with Nova. The two accidentally learn of the apes' plan to eradicate all humans from Earth.
