Virginia Woolf's "Orlando," published in 1928, is the world's first novel featuring a protagonist who changes gender midway through the story. A century later, transgender writer, philosopher, and activist Paul B. Preciado decided to send Woolf an audiovisual letter, informing her that her character had stepped into reality and that Orlando is now found all over the world. Preciado initiated a casting call, gathering 26 contemporary transgender and non-binary individuals aged 8 to 70 to portray the character of Orlando. Through these authentic voices, writings, theories, and images, he reconstructed various stages of his own transition experience. He stated that every Orlando is a transgender person who risks their life every day to survive, as they find themselves forced to confront laws, history, psychiatry, as well as traditional family values and the power of multinational pharmaceutical companies. But if "male" and "female" are ultimately political and social constructs, then this transformation is no longer just about gender; it also concerns poetry, love, and skin color.
