During the Christmas season of 1899, a rich holiday atmosphere envelops the capital city of St. Petersburg, as swirling snow and frozen rivers seem to be ignited by the excitement of the turn of the century. By the twist of fate, the lamplighter’s son Matvei (played by Fedor Fedotov) encounters the daughter of a high-ranking official, Alisa (played by Sonia Priss) on the festive streets. Matvei’s only treasure is his "silver skates," while Alisa dreams of studying science to break free from her father and fiancé Arkadi (played by Kirill Zaytsev).
