The sequel to "The Shining," "Doctor Sleep," is officially set for release in North America on January 24, 2020, based once again on Stephen King's novel of the same name. Directed by Mike Flanagan (known for "Gerald's Game," "Ouija: Origin of Evil," and "Before I Wake"), the film follows Danny Torrance, the son from "The Shining." After enduring a terrifying childhood at the Overlook Hotel, he has been wandering for decades, longing to escape his father's despair, alcoholism, and violence. Ultimately, he settles in a small town in New Hampshire, part of a supportive AA community. He finds work at a nursing home, where his remaining "shining" abilities provide crucial final comfort to the dying. With the help of a clairvoyant cat, he becomes the "Doctor Sleep." In 2001, a baby girl named Abra Stone is born, gradually showing supernatural powers and seemingly predicting the 9/11 events. She slowly and unintentionally establishes a telepathic bond with Danny, whose demons are reawakened as Abra's powers grow stronger than his. Danny is called to fight for Abra's soul and survival. Flanagan rewrote the script, which was initially adapted by Akiva Goldsman.
