Located southwest of the coast of Nagasaki, Japan, Hashima Island is named "Battleship Island" because of its striking resemblance to a battleship. Originally an uninhabited island, it gained attention in the 19th century due to the rich coal reserves beneath the sea. During World War II, it became a terrifying place that swallowed human lives. A hotel jazz band leader, Lee Gang-woo (played by Hwang Jung-min), along with his daughter, So-hee (played by Kim Soo-an), and other characters like Choi Chil-seong (played by So Ji-sub) and Mak-ji (played by Lee Jung-hyun), were deceived and forced to mine on Battleship Island after their dreams of fortune in Japan were shattered. Japanese imperialism was cruel and relentless, and the working conditions on Battleship Island were extremely harsh, where fragile lives could be extinguished at any moment. After years of suffering, the war finally ended. Gang-woo and the survivors thought they could return to the Korean Peninsula after enduring so much hardship. However, little did they know that the Japanese were determined to keep these "slaves" on Battleship Island forever to cover up their crimes...
