The film is adapted from the play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter, telling the story of Charlie (Brendan Fraser), a 272-kilogram English teacher who lives in seclusion in a rundown apartment in rural Idaho, stubbornly and resolutely trying to eat himself to death. Charlie abandoned his family for his same-sex lover in midlife, but after his lover's death, he copes with grief and guilt through binge eating, attempting to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink). As Charlie edges closer to his inevitable fate, his friend Liz (Hong Zhou), a cynical atheist nurse, and Elder Thomas (Ty Simpkins), a young missionary, try to find a will to save him, both physically and spiritually. However, only his estranged daughter Ellie can help him see a future beyond his current state of despair. Despite being sharp-tongued, filled with hatred, and prickly in demeanor, Charlie finds one last chance for redemption in Ellie, perhaps even a glimmer of hope.
