Young Maurice Hall (played by Orlando Wells) claims he will not marry after receiving sex education at the beach. In 1909, Hall (played by James Wilby) meets third-year student Clive Durham (played by Hugh Grant) during his second year at Cambridge. By 1910, their relationship progresses rapidly, leading to Hall being expelled from the college by the Dean of Cornwell (played by Barry Foster). In 1911, as his friend Lord Risley (played by Mark Tandy) faces imprisonment, Durham experiences immense psychological pressure. In 1912, after a month and a half of deep contemplation, Durham ends his relationship with Hall. In 1913, Durham invites Hall to be his best man at his wedding, not realizing that his gamekeeper Alex Scudder (played by Rupert Graves) will fall in love with Hall...
