In the future, Earth can no longer support such a large population, so humanity needs to venture into space to find other habitable planets. During the search for suitable planets, humans begin training apes to perform simple tasks instead of themselves. During a flight mission, astronaut Leo (played by Mark Wahlberg) loses contact with the space station when the ape-piloted spacecraft encounters a cosmic storm. In an attempt to rescue his partner, Leo defies orders and pilots the spacecraft into the heart of the storm alone. Ultimately, the spacecraft crashes on an unfamiliar planet.
