In a future world, construction worker Douglas (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) is troubled by recurring dreams, a series of experiences occurring on red Mars. Douglas discovers an advertisement for a memory travel company, and despite his colleagues warning him that this virtual travel could harm the human brain, it seems like a better option than actually visiting Mars, which is rife with anti-government rebels. Douglas voluntarily opts for the memory travel service, but the virtual memory process suddenly malfunctioned, leading to a series of incredible experiences for Douglas. First, his wife Lori (played by Sharon Stone) attacks him and admits she is a spy monitoring him. Then a stranger appears to help him escape and reveals that he is a special agent sent by the Martian dictator to deal with the anti-government rebels, and a woman named Melina (played by Rachel Ticotin) changes her stance... Douglas sets off for Mars, where all the mysteries lie, or is it all just a dream?
