In late 16th century Japan, Akechi Mitsuhide orchestrates the coup at Honno-ji, killing Oda Nobunaga, who was just a step away from unifying the country. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (played by Eiji Okuda) leads an army to defeat Mitsuhide and subsequently establishes the Toyotomi regime, bringing much-needed peace to the land. 15 years into this peaceful era, the Robin Hood-like thief Ishikawa Goemon (played by Yosuke Eguchi) becomes famous and beloved by the impoverished people. On the night of a grand festival, Goemon sneaks into a wealthy man's home to steal, which leads to the death of the wealthy man and his family at the hands of Ishida Mitsunari, one of the Five Commissioners. It turns out that Goemon inadvertently stole a box containing a shocking secret and later discarded it. The next day, upon learning the details of last night's events, Goemon goes to a slum to search for the box, while Ishida Mitsunari sends the ninja Kirigakure Saizo (played by Takao Osawa) to track its whereabouts. Intense battles ensue, and what secret does the box that brings about such bloodshed hold?
