An accident puts Dake (Steve McQueen) on the brink of a long and painful prison term. In order to spare her husband from suffering, Dake's wife Carol (Ali MacGraw) sacrifices her own dignity to bribe prison officials. As expected, Dake is granted special parole; meanwhile, Sheriff Byron (Ben Johnson) tells Dake that in exchange, he must help him with a "small favor"—robbing a bank! Under Byron's coercive influence, Dake has no choice but to comply, unaware that Byron has already sentenced him to death in his mind and never intended for Dake to leave the crime scene.
