Lola Montès is the favored courtesan of 19th-century European nobility, selling her scandalous history in a circus, which seems to be the price she pays for her indulgence. This is Ophüls' final film, framed in this way, using a collage of flashbacks to portray Lola's memories of touring performances across European countries, particularly her relationships with King Ludwig of Bavaria and composer Liszt.
