The film tells the story of a young British couple who move to a rural village in China during the 1920s. In this beautiful yet perilous environment, they experience emotional turmoil that is unimaginable and unattainable in their comfortable life back home, ultimately discovering the true meaning of love and sacrifice. The story begins with the female protagonist, Kitty, who, in an effort to escape the glamorous yet empty social circles of 1920s London and to avoid becoming an old maid, accepts the proposal of the taciturn doctor, Walter Fane. Once in Shanghai, Fane quickly immerses himself in his bacteriology research. Lonely, Kitty embarks on an affair with the charming married man, Charlie Townsend, and when Fane discovers it, he feels both shame and anger. In a bid for revenge and to reshape his life, Fane decides to gamble everything and takes Kitty to a remote town ravaged by cholera. Walter moves from a pristine laboratory to the front lines of the epidemic, slowly helping to control the local outbreak. Kitty begins volunteering at a convent-hospital run by French nuns, gradually regaining her courage and sense of purpose in life. Walter and Kitty finally open their hearts to each other, but just as their intimacy grows, Walter contracts cholera. Walter's survival will determine whether their newfound passion can blossom into eternal love...
