Sandra (played by Sandra Hüller), Samuel (played by Samuel Theis), and their visually impaired son Daniel (played by Milo Machado Graner) have lived in a remote mountain area for a year. One day, Samuel is found dead outside the house, prompting an immediate investigation by the police into the suspected homicide. In uncertain circumstances, Sandra is accused: was it suicide or murder? A year later, Daniel attends his mother's trial, which also serves as a true dissection of his parents' relationship.
