Basel (played by John Mills) is the newly appointed commander of the mountain infantry regiment. This serious and earnest man has decided right from the start of his tenure to eliminate the laziness within the army. Before Basel's arrival, life in the infantry regiment was relaxed and enjoyable, and Colonel Claysin (played by Alec Guinness) was thriving. However, things have changed, and this has left Claysin very dissatisfied. Although on the surface Claysin agrees with all of Basel's decisions, he secretly stirs up complaints and discontent among his subordinates towards Basel. One day, Claysin discovers that one of his subordinates is secretly courting his daughter. Angered, Claysin gives this oblivious young man a severe beating.
