The film depicts the achievements of Prince Alexander Nevsky of 13th century Russia as he leads the military and civilians to defeat the plundering German Livonian Teutonic Knights. Eisenstein draws on the techniques of folk epic poetry, giving this patriotic epic a distinctly grand operatic style. After invading Russia, the Teutonic Knights committed heinous acts. They plundered Pskov and hanged patriots. Nevsky led the masses, with activists like Ignat as the backbone, to defend the crucial stronghold of Novgorod, eliminating the traitor Tovarchilo. Finally, they achieved a significant victory over the Teutonic Knights on the ice of Lake Chud.
