In the delivery room of a hospital in Stockholm, three women, each nurturing new life, meet once again. They are Angela (Harriet Andersson), who is aristocratic and snobbish; Edla (Gunnel Lindblom), who is lively and cheerful; and Adele (Gio Petré), who is melancholic and gloomy. Despite coming from different backgrounds, they are reunited by the imminent arrival of their babies. While waiting for their deliveries, memories from their youth resurface. These recollections bring to light the complexities of love, the moral constraints within marriage that bind personal freedom, and the oppression from their husbands. At the same time, they ponder the fate women bear and the roles assigned to them in society. The story oscillates between the present and memories, sometimes depicting joyful banquets in lavish mansions, and at other times immersing itself in the pain and helplessness of the delivery room. These scenes intertwine, presenting the various dilemmas and challenges faced in marriage and partnerships.
