Noble youth Rafał meets the young and beautiful girl Gajena at a carnival, and the two fall in love at first sight and secretly have an affair. Their romance is discovered by their families, and Rafał is cast out by his father. Years later, Rafał joins a secret organization introduced by a friend of his brother, where he encounters his former lover Gajena, who is now married to the leader of the secret organization. Despite this, she still loves Rafał. One night, they are captured by robbers, and to save herself, Gajena jumps into an abyss. After being rescued, Rafał is mistaken for a robber, imprisoned for a long time, and loses faith in life. Later, with the help of a friend, Rafał regains his spirits and joins the Polish Legion. This film is based on the novel of the same name by the renowned Polish critical realist writer Stefan Zeromski and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Wajda's interest in this theme is evident: he attempts to trace the formation process of Polish national consciousness. The film sparked enthusiastic discussions among the Polish intellectual community, with many authorities in the humanities and some well-known writers expressing their opinions. Before this, there had never been a film that elicited such a broad response from the intellectuals.
