The story takes place during World War II, where the air raids by Nazi Germany inflicted severe losses on the U.S. Army's Eighth Air Force. The long and drawn-out war caused the morale and fighting spirit of the U.S. troops to nearly vanish, pushing them to the brink of despair. However, the dire situation did not allow them a moment's relaxation or respite. At this critical juncture, headquarters dispatched a new commander, Frank Savage (played by Gregory Peck), to take over the group.
